Are GOOGLE trying to hijack the word ZEITGEIST?

When I Think of the word Zeitgeist as I instantly think of the series of documentaries chronicling the reality of our times. The doco’s pull the curtains back and reveal how the world really works and what is truly happening behind the scenes. It has become an internet sensation and is one of the most searched terms on the internet.

    Today I stumbled across this:

    http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/zeitgeist/index.html

I think in virtue of its popularity Google are now using the word to describe a new service/product they are working on. Personally I think this is wrong as it will surely lead eventually lead to people becoming confused and many who haven’t yet seen Zeitgeist may search it and become lost somehow ending up with some sort of Google net trends info.

Are Google working with the insiders at some level in order to try and take the Zeitgeist movement out of the spotlight as it is surely ruffling some feathers high in the food chain somewhere or are they simply trying to capitalise on the popularity of this word?

Job scam – Online Trade Training

I came across this site last night and couldn’t believe it. This site is nothing more than a con for some company called online trade training. So the entire site is set up to look like a Consumer warning report site where this particular product, online trade training is been reviewed. However, the entire site has been established to sell the online trade training and there are no other products or information on there. Have a look at the following link.

    Online Trade Training

What you think? Should this be allowed?

BRW 2011 Best Places to work

I just got my nice fresh smelling copy of BRW’s top 50 places to work. Looks like, unlike last year, they may have got it right by giving google position 1. Perhaps this makes their rating system slightly more credible.

But the list of the top 50 companies according to BRW 2011 is,

    1. Google
    2. E-Web Marketing
    3. NetApp Australia

Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Exchange

I’ve just spoken with a friend who is running a mid sized business and has recently switched the Google Apps Migration for Microsoft® Exchange. His stoked with the service and thinks that it beats his old exchange server 10 fold. However, I’m just curious, before I make the leap, what’s the experience of anyone else? Is it a good move? One thing I do like is the search speed. Even when I compare performance to our 10k servers, this seems like a major advantage. What about everyone else?

    ReachLocal – Orange Passion

I was trolling Seek today looking at the various jobs out there and noticed another sales/marketing company using an on-line video to promote their company.

Check out this video – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfGool0DHEE&feature=player_embedded

Growing faster than google hey ? LOL. Honestly, does this video really leave you think that ReachLocal are a secure, reliable and firm player or does it leave you thinking, hmmm, “don’t know if they are going to be around in 3 months?”

Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes I watch videos like this one and wonder to myself, would they have been better off without a video? In this case I think yes. But would be keen to hear what others think?

    Facebook turns to shit

Well, it was only a matter of time before facebook crossed the line and sold out to it\’s loyal and otherwise ignorant users. It appears that according to a number of sites, Facebook is planning to \”sponsor\” individuals who make positive comments about businesses and products. Of course, the word \”sponsor\” shouldn\’t be used too lightly because as many people will recall the old term, \”cash for comment\” and the total chaos that this caused. What I want to know is this. At what point does this tool cross the line. I\’m a big fan of google because at no point have they allowed their wheels to be dirtied with their power. Facebook on the other hand, shame on you. Has anyone else read about this?

Facebook aids Police in Western Suburbs gang wars

A couple of days ago I was shocked to witness a short article about a number of violent gangs operating out of the Western Suburbs in Victoria. This article was of particular interest to me because of the fact that Police had intervened and managed to halt the inevitable violence by using information gained from facebook to gain critical information about those involved. Furthermore police had used facebook to identify critical information about the apparent “showdown location” of gang members who had intended to meet and “fight it out” once and for all.

If I recall correctly, the article on the news suggested that gang members in Victoria’s western suburbs were using facebook to attack each other with insults and taunts and other such small minded things.

The story was of particular interest to me because I was curious as to how this information was obtained by police. If such information was available on a facebook fan page or member page than it’s not such an amazing story. However, if police were actually monitoring facebook accounts than it is a very important and noteworthy issue. From my perspective, I am interested if they are scraping the information through search engine technology or if they are actually monitoring personal accounts?

So this morning I commenced my endeavors to find some information about it hoping I may find a new angle on gathering facebook search scraping. But guess what? Every single reference to the western suburbs gang war seems gone? I could find no such article on the hearldsun.com.au, theage.com.au, the australian, local news papers, google, nothing !

I recall some time ago reading that the term “gang” was no longer permitted to be used by the Police so I changed my search terms but still came up with nothing.

I then stumbled upon a page by crikey.com.au. This is the URL

    http://www.crikey.com.au/2009/06/07/the-sunday-media-wrap-a-real-live-gang-war-proper-news-at-last/

Contained on this page is a reference to ; ”

“Elite shock teams – critical incident response teams will be boosted under sweeping police reforms sqays the Melbourne Sunday Herald Sun” with a reference to this URL – http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25598520-2862,00.html

But guess what? “Page not found”.

It almost appears as though every single reference to the western suburbs wars in Victoria have vanished. A little bit of history it would seem is no longer in existence?

How can this happen? Either I’m totally mad and imagined an issue in my own mind, or, a very strategic campaign has occurred to write this issue out of the history books? Is this possibly because we are not suppose to know that police can monitor facebook, or is it because we are not suppose to acknowledge the existence of gang wars? I’m not sure, whatever the case, I find this interesting, if not concerning…. What do you guys think?

    Linkedin Juggernaut Rolls On

Jeff Weiner, CEO of Linkedin, wants the company to be synonymous with ‘talent’ just as ‘Internet Search’ is for Google. In an interview with Techcrunch, he talks about past achievements and sheds light on future plans. Not surprisingly, Linkedin’s recruitment products are the largest and fastest growing part of the business. However, Jeff is careful

how much is too much information

How much is too much information? I read a article that said google has datacentre’s with unbelievable amounts of data i refer to ‘http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2006/09/how-much-data-does-google-store.html’

So i ask the question is this too much information for one single company to have? I mean i am concerned that a company has information about my sexual interest, my work, my family, my pictures, bank details and just about everything.

Who monitors google? to make sure they dont sell or use the data for no good?

I would be more concerned about this than asylum seekers.

Does anyone know how these companys such as google/microsoft (not to mention microsoft now has something pop up on my computer saying gathering data then sends it off to its HQ) amazon are monitored?

Using google to target your next boss.

What a great idea. If you're looking for your next job, just use google ad words to target your next hire by using their name as the primary search string. The results it would seem are excellent.

Using Google to Find a job.

    Indeed.com.au <- WTF?

Who is indeed.com.au and why do they hang around recruitment agencies like a bad smell.

What I want to know in particular is how and why have they managed to scrape jobs from seek and other job boards?

By all accounts from having a good look at the site they run indeed.com.au is nothing more than a link farm. A bad one at that!

Yet they maintain a great Page Rank with google. Why?

An electric shock every time I get in the lift.

I have a real problem that is getting worse and I don’t know what to do anymore.

By background, I am a very successful HR consultant in a large company in the CBD. About 2 years ago this condition started but I cannot find any specific information relating to how to resolve this issue. Unlike most phobias, my fear is not based on unrealistic or false possibilities. I’ve even googled it and can’t find anything to help me get an answer.

My problem is I am afraid of getting an electric shock every time I go to the lift. In fact, every time I touch a lift button or a light switch I get a very sharp electric shock which is becoming so intense I find myself breaking into a cold sweat each time I have to press it.

For around the last 6 weeks now I havn’t touched any switches or pressed the lift button. In fact, I was 15 minutes late to an important meeting last week because I stood on the bottom floor waiting for someone to come and use the lift. I found myself walking up to the lift to push the button, but just couldn’t bring myself to pushing it.

I’ve changed my shoes, I’ve tried different socks, I’ve even bought different suits. But I keep getting these shocks.

Has anyone come across anything like this before or does anyone have any advice they can provide? As I said, I’ve tried to google this and I cannot find any information anywhere.

Job Boards – a dead end business strategy according to Geoff Jennings

Last night I listened to the most intriguing conversation between several industry leaders relating to the future of the Job Board future in Australia.

What I found particularly interesting was an argument put forward by Geoff Jennings that suggested that the BBS system (ie, the job board model as it stood today was a flawed model moving forward into the future and was ultimately destined for failure).

The interviewer was somewhat cavalier and dismissive with Geoff’s thoughts and I felt that overall Geoff deserved more respect especially considering his previous career working for Careerone in such a senior capacity.

In terms of tools like LinkedIN and other networking products, there is no doubt of the social advantage they create in relation to creating quality networks within the professional market. In fact, networks is what it’s all about and LinkedIN’s incredible growth is a sure sign that this is where the market is heading. However, there remains one simple and single flaw to the model of LinkedIn that can never be overcome. It is the following statement –

“He’ll work well with you because.,..”

In truth, the job board portals serve their place. That place is essentially for satisfying mid to low level positions that are not mission critical or business dependent vacancies. In fact, any client who has a vacancy which is easily filled shouldn’t waste their time or money on a recruiter when they only need to spend $250.00 on Seek. However, the value of a good search or recruitment consultant will never be replaced by tools like LinkedIN, Seek, Mycareer or Careerone. Why? Simple – let me explain.

A good recruiter has a strong network and “knows” implicitly who is good and who is not. He/She becomes a partner to his/her client with the intent on helping find the very best candidate in the market. In short, this value cannot be replaced by pro-active candidates looking to apply for jobs or happily accepting LinkedIn invitations.

In terms of Geoff’s argument, I’m not so sure. What I will say is that if your business model is simply advertising, drawing a short list and setting up interviews, you don’t really have a marketable business model.
