Is Facebook a B2B channel (yet)? You can dress SPAM up anyway you like, but SPAM is SPAM is SPAM. Or is it? When I was thinking about this post, it was in response to accepting a friend request from someone I had actually met (albeit in a business context so not a “real” friend). I did hesitate in accepting their request but then decided it could do no harm. I could always unfriend him which I did within 15 minutes. Why? Because he seemed to think it was OK to fill my wall with advice on how to use social media for business! Obviously it wasn't just me seeing this but personally, I didn't want it thank you. I considered it SPAM. Yes, I had accepted his request so therefore I had given him tacit approval to send me his drivel but as with e-mail, I could unsubscribe at anytime; which I did. I accept this may sound a little hypocritical of me, as I also give advice on how to use social media for recruitment but my point of this post is to ask if Facebook is really suitable for B2B marketing. B2C I am totally comfortable with (and that includes recruitment) but I'm not sure about B2B. I do of course have other “friends” who do the same as my unfriend but some are more subtle and less frequent although it still bothers me slightly. Some posts I just hide so I never see them as they are from people I like but I just don't want their business messages. Of course some friends talk a load of nonsense on Facebook (I know I do) but I don't mind that as that is what Facebook is for if they choose. You know the scrolling ticker, on the right side of the screen posting status updates in real time. I’m guessing this is Facebook’s answer to twitter. Why reinvent the wheel right? One of Michael’s friends, Rayanne Thorn , replied, “I don’t even notice it….hmmm.” Yep. Me neither. If you have over 100 friends, let alone 1000, the ticker doesn’t stop. As a matter of fact, by the time I notice something on the ticker, something worth checking out, it usually has already disappeared, replaced by a new status update. So, now like Rayanne, I don’t even notice. It is useless to me. I’m blind to it. I quit looking months ago. Facebook (and twitter in many respects) has cried wolf. I am not a Facebook upgrade hater. And I get tired of the wonks that make it a sport to complain about Facebook upgrades. I mean who gives a crap. But there is an HR lesson to be learned. Providing too much info is nuts. It just doesn’t get your message across. I struggle with this and have been coached on this. Hence I am nuts. But I digress…. So to curb content overload (written, spoken and read): If you think your email is too long—it is. It just is. It JUST IS! Have someone proofread your messages. No matter your “level” find someone to read your content. Regarding executive overviews: have someone not familiar with your topic read the overview. Someone with no knowledge of the topic should be able to understand the overview and the highlights. Check out any good direct mail piece (ie junk mail, coupons, etc.). You may hate them, but they work. Good coupons have virtually no text. And they are actually read. Check out any Steve Jobs presentation. The slides have just enough text to allow Steve to tell a good story. Give your audience/reader the benefit of the doubt they are not stupid. Many times they can put the correct context into your shortened content. Here is a small blurb from 37 Signals on the subject (People don’t scroll….emails ). There it is. And for those of you who think this blog post is too long, I swear I’m working on it. In the meantime, I guess you’ll have to do as I say not as I do…. Go here to read the rest: Tags: facebook, hr (& life!) advice, Industry Chat, pals, real, result, social media, Wheel You, Your Social Media Presence, and Gosh Darn It…That Picture You Posted…I’m looking at LinkedIn profiles this morning. I’m actually re-verifying a list of candidates, the organizations they work for and Hoover’s information. Good fun stuff early on a Friday. It’s actually pretty tedious. But as I’m clicking and cross referencing, gosh darn it if I don’t see your LinkedIn profile pic. Post whatever you want on Facebook and use your privacy controls, but when it comes time to network on a site that labels itself a “Professional Network” aka where the people who might hire you hang out…a few common sense rules: a) Don’t use a fake photo – be you – not Bart Simpson, b) Look like you have clothes on. Seriously. The tube top is a great fashion item but not on a professional profile, c) No kids. I like kids; I have some of my own. But LinkedIn isn’t the place to feature them. Pretty simple, huh? You’d think. Some people still don’t get it. I did a presentation last fall and was highlighting this awesome candidate I found…just the right person for the group of HR pro’s in the room and everyone got hung up on the photo. Why? Because strapless tops have been in for a while and this woman cropped her photo just so it looked like she had no clothes on. Totally lost the group on her fabulous credentials because she looked naked. Ugh.And that’s why you have to think about that photo…because Human Resources professionals are human. Whether they want to or not, they make judgments within seconds of viewing your profile and if you’ve got a misguided photo, it may get their attention, but it may taint their review of your experience. Because they’re human. This is just like dressing appropriately for an interview…it’s a first impression. So clean it up or take it out. Your call. The social networks could take the market from the job boards in maybe half that time; so it is now the job boards market to lose. Here's a few things they could try to save it. Become social Yep, that old chestnut. Actually, I don't think they can or will so we'll pass on that one. Integrate with the ATS That's what Linkedin did and within only a matter of weeks, four of the top ATS vendors had all fallen in line (and many smaller ones). Problem is, there is only one Linkedin but 1,000's of job boards so can't see that one working either. Integrate with Linkedin Imagine a job seeker on Jobsite looks at a job and once they've applied they get to see who they are connected with in that company. What an idea and of course Linkedin already offer that kind of integration. I wonder how they'd like that? Sock it to 'em job board man. Create customer Pages on Facebook Let job seekers 'Like' a customer job section and hey presto, you've helped the customer build up a…. wait for it….. talent pool. Does it really matter? In most cases it doesn’t which is what some bright spark in Costa product marketing thought. But try telling that to the kids – or the baristas! Last season(!) they had the caramel crunch which was an ice/milk/caramel sauce drink all put together using the amazing Blendtec blender. You could also get a coffee version. Coffee or caramel. Different name, different sound. Not something that gets mixed up. Now this season they have the toffee cooler and the coffee cooler. See where this is going? The person who decided on the name change (even though it still uses CARAMEL sauce) has probably never served one of these in their life. The staff are struggling with this as customers ask for one thing but get another. Stupid staff you may think, but in a noisy coffee shop with Blendtec blenders screaming away in the background they are up against it. Marketing or whoever you are; get out of your shiny offices and put yourself on the frontline. You may just learn something. So far no one cares. Why should they? Profits maybe? How many get thrown away because of a name? What does that cost in time and reputation? What about opening up a communication channel so your employees can tell you about such things? Like Facebook but internal only? You know Facebook don’t you, and Twitter. You spend countless hours and £’s wooing your customers via these channels but ignore your staff. Shame on you Costa. Treat your employees like customers and they will give you great ideas, stay longer, tell their friends. Ignore them at your peril. Toffee or caramel? Who would have thought it. See the rest here: Tags: caramel, crunch, employee engagement, facebook, hmmm, Industry Chat, result, retailers, sauce, social media, spark, thought, toffee You Had to See This One Coming…LinkedIn Cuts Off Access to BranchOut and BeKnown…LinkedIn cut off access to BranchOut, BeKnown (two recruiting apps that reside in Facebook and enabled users to pull data directly from their LinkedIn profiles) and several other apps on Friday…see the full deet's in this article from TechCrunch. Two reasons at play here, one app was apparently intent on creating a premium based enterprise recruiting tool, and the other may have been blatantly promoting their service (and according to the article there were concerns the second app would also get involved with a premium enterprise recruiting search tool). Good for LinkedIn. They should protect themselves and their data. They're big business, and guess what? We're all guests at their party. If anything, it's their time to be playing the Cuba Gooding Jr role from Jerry Maguire: That's right, you want to play with their users? You gotta pay. Show 'em the money. Right now, if you're an app and you want their content to make money for you, hell, I think you should face the same thing we recruiters face and have to pay. I bet LinkedIn has it all figured out, just give 'em a call. It'll be tiered and I'm betting if your app is the one to really figure out recruiting on Facebook, using the LinkedIn knowledge base, LinkedIn will talk to you. The BranchOut rebuttal? (changes to the LinkedIn API won't hurt us much since a low percentage of our users actually used it, and btw, we believe users should be able to own their personal data and transfer it where it has the most ultility. PS – the next generation recruiting product will be built on Facebook)…what can I say…it's perfect . As for Monster's rebuttal to LinkedIn? (We are surprised and disappointed by LinkedIn’s decision, which we believe not only goes against the interests of LinkedIn users, but also contradicts what LinkedIn claims to stand for – openness and connectivity) Sweet. The air of entitlement made me chuckle….literally chuckle. Like Monster is absolutely entitled to LinkedIn's customer base and offended that LinkedIn would think otherwise…this is the same Monster that has monetized the hell out of the online recruiting process and are indiscriminate, corporate or TPR, you pay to play. I am sure the people at Monster are smart enough to realize there are other ways for their BeKnown users to access their LinkedIn networks, it's all tied to exporting connections, I found that semi-inferred in their response. All these little apps are great, and watching this tech drama play out is fun. But they'll all be forgotten the day Facebook decides to roll out its own version of LinkedIn. The moment FB decides to conquer the professional networking market and stress the importance of completing the information tab to its users and making it, and only it, either publicly available (i.e. you appear in search results on Google and Bing) or housed within a sub-network created just for your professional connections (and of course not revealing those Last Friday Night pics your friends put up or who you're connected too)…well all apps will be forgotten and it'll provide a total new round of major dollars for Zuckerberg. LinkedIn has over 100 million members and huge corporations and individual recruiters pay and pay for access. The potential to have access to over 600 million international members? And have Facebook backing the initiative? Huge. Editor's Note – Kelly Dingee is a professional stalker/Strategic Recruiting Manager with Staffing Advisors . Fun!At SHRM11 I was given a heads up to see Matt Kaiser , talent management strategist for NAS Recruitment. Kaiser presented “Social Media: The Reinvention of Recruitment”, which was simply focused on the basics of social media recruiting. If you were looking for the next generation of Social Media recruiting, this wasn’t the venue for it. However, Matt was a terrific and engaging speaker. Check him out. The venue was packed! Standing room only. Fire marshals shut the doors to the overflow attendees. Very velvet- ropey. It is very easy to get jaded in the HR blogosphere that there is nothing new to say in this space. But if you haven’t heard it (which this crowd had not)- it’s new to you. The packed session was a reminder to the jaded that there are still so many who have a true need to learn social media recruiting. From square one. Now . It was not a shock to hear 54% of comps polled by Robert Half still ban social media at work. It was disappointing but not surprising to see only a smattering of hands raised when asked “who all is on facebook…who all is on twitter”? It was equally non-surprising to see everybody raise their hand at “who all is on LinkedIn?” Yet it is doubtful any are really using LinkedIn to have conversations. Nevertheless, Matt, knowing his audience, had good points for the 101er which included: · Know what you want to get out of Social Media · Set Goals · Solidify your Personal Brand · Develop a Social Media Policy · Think Mobile (This actually was a nice newer 101 tidbit.) In addition, there were some interesting tidbits one may want to check into if you need to start managing ALL of your Social Media Activity from one space. Matt suggested Spreadfast . I'll throw in one other you may want to check out called Crowdbooster . After describing each point, Matt typically followed up with “you now must create an action plan” around each of his main points and all their subpoints. After about 30 minutes, I started to see attendees glaze a bit because now it feels like work. A lot of it. And I am new to Social Media, and oh, I don’t even have a twitter account……eyes roll back in head…. I do not disagree with Matt Kaiser's take. He was a fabulous speaker with a relevant topic for the appropriate audience. I simply suggest one thing was missing. Fun. Where's The Party Man?… There is a spirit of fun these new social mediums have that simply cannot compare to typing an ad on a typerwriter in 1985. Well, not unless you were typing your ad with the sweet, sweet sounds of Duran Duran in the background. The spirit does not include a long Franklin-Covey list to check off when you are through. I think that presenters on social media recruiting spend a bit too much time on steps and not enough time on the fun, personalized, authentic, interaction that truly, really-really gets people to learn the tool. People, even adult people, like to have fun. When something is fun, we simply do it more. I may suggest a session that is “Social Media Bar”, where you give the new comer a real life taste of twitter. Set up their account profile, set them up with a few hash tags and let the conversations begin. The magic of that interaction will transfer to the “real life” work application fairly quickly. Because, well, work is life. There is definitely a time to have a plan, but sometimes the best strategy is no strategy at all. Editor's Note – Dawn Hrdlica (PHR) is VP of People at DAXKO.
