this year, a shockingly good Window Phone 7 fan video was making the rounds online and creating a lot of chatter on social media. Microsoft tracked down video’s creator, Florida native Brandon Foy, and invited him to make a second video for MIX11 . If the video got 200K views, Microsoft promised to use it as a TV ad. While the video didn’t make it to TV (yet), Brandon scored himself a pretty decent consolation prize: a full-time job as a User Experience (UX) Designer in Windows. Not too shabby, Brandon. I sat down with Brandon at his new office on the Redmond campus to discuss how he surprised Microsoft with his WP7 video and how Microsoft surprised him with its commitment to design. Your work is really impressive. Where’d you get your skills? I’ve been interested in design, technology and music since I was a little kid growing up in South Florida. I studied design at Full Sail University and also learned a lot about motion graphics, computer animation and compositing. I’m always looking for a new challenge. Did you ever think that your video would land you a job at Microsoft? People are always complimenting me on “my plan to get a job at Microsoft.” Honestly, I wasn’t looking to come and work here. I didn’t even know that Microsoft had high-level design opportunities. Where did you want to work? I had recently graduated and was interning at Full Sail while I sorted out my next step. I was pretty focused on getting into the film industry, but – more importantly –I wanted to go where I could make an impact. How’d you get the idea to make the video then? My cousin and I are very close and have always shared a passion for technology. He’s a big “Microsoft guy” and had a new Windows Phone 7. I was amazed by the principles of motion design that the phone exhibited; it was the first time I had ever seen a mobile device go that route. As a flipped through the phone, I started to imagine the motion graphics with music behind them. I like to create all sorts of different things, but making music is my “foundation.” I always have a soundtrack coursing through my head. When I am doing things, even regular day-to-day things, I add music in my mind – especially music timed to movement. I told my cousin about my idea and he encouraged me to turn it into a video. How long did it take you to make? A couple of weeks. And towards the end, I wasn’t sleeping very much. I finished it, posted it on YouTube and some social media and then crashed. I had the first solid night of sleep in a while and woke up to find out that the video had already gone viral. Hashtags and everything. I mean, it really blew up. That’s when you started getting calls from Microsoft? Yeah, it was crazy. All of a sudden, I was speaking with five different people at Microsoft. They were like, “Can you make another video for Mix11?” And Microsoft brought you out to the event in Las Vegas? Yes. It was a very cool experience, but also surreal. I couldn’t believe it was all happening until I was up on the stage in Vegas. And next thing I knew, I was out here in Redmond, interviewing for design roles. Is the company pretty different from what you imagined? I’m impressed by how much youthful influence we have on the team. There’s a lot to learn from people who’ve been on the team for a while, but they also listen to us and really value our ideas. There’s a devotion to design here. The focus on design runs much deeper than at a lot of agencies known only for their creative work. What would you say to other young designers who are starting their careers? While agency work or something like film can be fascinating, Windows is where it’s at – it is the base for everything. Not only do I challenge myself as a designer every day, but I know that my work is really going to impact peoples’ lives around the world. Clients are becoming more sophisticated in their approach to sourcing, and are investing more people and money into building high performing recruitment teams. Recruitment consultants working for agencies need to evolve quickly to ensure that they retain a unique edge in the market and have a decent value proposition. The obvious big change affecting the world of recruitment at the moment is the role of social media tools and technology. Everyone is trying to integrate new technology and social media such as Facebook and Twitter into their sourcing strategy. This might mean that the successful recruiter of the future is a social media guru that can write beautiful Boolean. That said, can good old fashioned networking and referrals ever be replaced by technology? I personally think not. The successful recruiter of now and the future is raising the bar, they are likely to have some specialist industry experience, they can articulate a value proposition that will differentiate them from the competition, and they can run a client or candidate meeting that isn’t just about putting a round peg into a round hole, but is about genuinely adding value. They will not think of recruitment in terms of “filling jobs” but of developing a market and a reputation that focuses on deep specialist knowledge and a service driven mentality. The phone bangers of yesteryear that once successfully hailed “Have you got any jobs?” are thankfully dead and buried. James Hone started his recruitment career in London in the late 1990s. A client’s perception that they have received value for their recruitment spend is what will play a major part in determining the success of future recruiters. In an attempt to reduce recruitment spend and centralise the recruitment exercise, we have seen the emergence of large scale RPOs and internal recruitment teams within our corporate and government clients alike. Successful recruitment consultants will be those who work with, rather than against, these internal mechanisms. Agents will need to understand that internal recruiters are also under enormous pressure to deliver against stringent KPIs, where their performance is additionally monitored by internal stakeholders. It is vital to work cohesively with them and their processes, in order to maintain high levels of repeat business from them. Networking and the quality of one’s networks, has become more important than ever. Successful recruiters will have wider and stronger networks both on the client side and the candidate side and this is what will give them the “edge” on their competition. With the IT sector experiencing such low unemployment rates, coupled with the candidate pool tightening, the ability to tap into a pool of passive candidates will be pivotal to success. Building online communities that are immediately accessible will also be a major factor in success. Clients are continuing to disengage with unprofessional recruitment consultants who appear to offer little in the way of value and who actually create more work for them. At least half the team here at recruitment extra are ‘global transitioners’ and a good percentage of our regular contributors also have a non-Australian heritage. We like to think that our international experience is beneficial and widens our reach and understanding of the recruitment industry worldwide! The ebb and flow of global employment will always continue, particularly amongst younger workers who can easily obtain visas, but in the face of an acute skill shortage in Australia is it set to escalate and escalate one way only? The government is releasing greater numbers of 457 working visas in order to fill some gaps but is it enough? Continuing to up the numbers of skilled immigrants and sending more and more work offshore might help in the short-term but what long-term economic consequences will it have? One aspect everyone seems to be in agreement with is the need to upskill and train out current workforce and get the long-term unemployed back to work. It is time we all started to take a greater responsibility to develop our employees, candidates and even ourselves. After going for 2 interviews with this organisation I was introduced into a whole new world known as “The Cobra Group”. The Cobra Group is a sales and marketing organisation that specialise in direct face to face marketing. Looking back on my time at The Cobra Group I believe that the leaders of The Cobra Group take advantage of the people in the organisation by promising them long term dreams, the end goal they promise is that one day you will be able to own your own company and have the potential to earn $100,000 per year gross, which looking back now isn’t really much at all. The people in the organisation are not paid a wage because they are paid on a commission basis for the sales they make. We were taken on as sole contractors but never really educated on the fact that we needed to pay our own tax and superannuation. I honestly believe that the senior people within The Cobra Organisation have set up the organisation to really only benefit themselves and the money they make and they are able to convince people to work hard by making false promises to young people. I worked in this organisation for over 2 years and worked my absolute butt off yet however was in a worse position then when I first began because I owed a considerable amount of money to the ATO. The only way to get ahead in The Cobra Group is by recruiting team members underneath you, the catch is the only people you can convince to walk around 8 hours a day, door knocking, selling various products and services with commission based only pay is young people, who fall for the illusion of success in the future. I want to warn everyone out there of The Cobra Group as I see it as almost a slave labour organisation that promise dreams in the future that are very rarely reached.
